Roman Reinfuss — F O L K A R T I N RZESZÓW V O I VODSHIP AND R E S E A R C H C A R R I E D OUT T H E R E
Folk art in Rzeszów Voivodship is greatly varied,
and this is connected with the fact that this region
is inhabited by a number of ethnographic groups,
each with their own traditional culture. I n the
northern and central parts, inhabited by Polish
population, the following groups can be distinguishe:
Lasowiaks (formerly from the Sandomierz Forest),
the Pogórzans and three separate groups from Rze
szów, Łańcut and Przeworsk.
The southern and eastern parts are inhabited by
Ukrainians, among whom the Ł e m k o w i e from the
L o w Beskids and the Bojkowie from the Bieszczady
Mountains stand out because of the different char
acter of their highland culture. To the south of the
part inhabited by the Ł e m k o w i e we find the Dolinians, who live in the neighbourhood of Ukrainian
villages. The author of the article reports on the
extensive research being carried on in the Rzeszów
Voivodship. Apart from the large amount of existing
literature on the subject, research is now being con
ducted by: the Regional Museum in Rzeszów, the
Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the
Museum of Folk Building in Sanok.

SCULPTURE IN STONE IN T H E REGION OF T H E
ŁEMKOWIE. P A R T I I , F I G U R E S .
The folk sculpture of the Ł e m k o w i e can be di
vided into three groups: 1. old sculptures, definitely
bearing the stamp of historical styles; 2. modern
sculptures, done with great technical skill, but
reminiscent of plaster devotional figures i n their
banality; 3. figures that have preserved the primi
tive folk spirit, reminiscent of religious figures
carved in wood. The author of the article analyses
the last-mentioned group of sculptures. I n the region
inhabited by the Ł e m k o w i e , these sculptures are
linked with the production of the stone masons
workshops there. The artistic work of the stone
masons kept strictly to architectural sculptures —
shrines and figures: figures on crosses in cemeteries
and on wayside crosses and the figures in shrines.
Out of the large range of figures representing Christ
on the Cross, the author distinguishes several groups
with specific formal features.

F O L K PAINTING IN T H E VILLAGES OF RZE
SZÓW V O I V O D S H I P
A new and particularly widespread kind of folk
art today are the so-called "tapestries", which are
paintings on paper, linen, or simply on the wall
itself. These "tapestries" have become very popular
in Rzeszów Voivodship, as they did all over the
country after the First World War. They started
being painted for sale after 1945 and their production
developed mainly in centres which, on the one hand,
could boast of rich traditions in ornamentation and,
on the other hand, presented possibilities of selling
them. The size of the "tapestries" is anything up to
two sq. metres. The subjects vary considerably, from
plant and animal motifs to whole "views" with
human figures and animals against the background
of a landscape. They are usually painted by women.
The painting technique is marked for its naivety,
primitivism and a tendency towards decorative stylization. This is one of the few kinds of folk art
destined for use in the villages, where the "tape
stries" are very popular.

T
The genesis of the "tapestries" is, according to
the author, to be found in the general tendencies
of ornamentation in folk art; he points to the simi
larity between the ornamentation of the "tapestries"
and that of painted coffers (fig. 10, 11) embroidery
(fig. 4, 5), etc. On the other hand, the so-called petty
bourgeois taste has had an evident influence on the
work of the artists painting these "tapestries"
(fig. 13).
Despite certain common features in the "tape
stries" from various areas, there are some characte
ristic groups among them which definitely stand out
from the rest, bearing the specific features of
various centres. This can be seen if only by comp
aring examples from Rzeszów Voivodship with those
from the Lublin Voivodship (Fig. 41).

GEOIS P A I N T E R S O F LEŻAJSK IN
CENTURY
— BOUR
T H E 19th
Leżajsk, which, thanks to the miraculous picture
of the Madonna in the Bernadine Monastery there,
was a town where religious festivals were held
from the end of the 17th century to the end of the
19th century, was also the home of picture painters
who, apart from making pictures for sale at the
festivals, also painted pictures on commission for
the burghers and the monastery. Apart from many
anonymous works, there are some pictures with
a signature. The authoresses of the article deal with
the works of the following painters of the 19th
century: Zachariasz Chodziński (fig. 1—4), Szymon
Chodziński (fig. 5—6), Jakub Stankiewicz (fig. 8).
T. Bąkowski and W ł a d y s ł a w B ą k o w s k i and F r a n
ciszek Ksawery Stankiewicz (fig. 11—15). They based
their work on patterns seen in wood-cuts and
engravings (fig. 16). Many of their pictures represent
the Lelżajsk Madonna.

LEŻAJSK
The development of the production of glazed tiles
in Leżajsk can be observed from the second half of
the 18th century on the basis of the material avail
able. The authoress traces the beginnings of this
art back to a stove made in the second half of the
18th century, to be found in the Bernardine Church
in Leżajsk (fig. 48—51, 52).
The painted tiles described i n the article, which
have been dated as work from the end of the 19th
century, have measurements varying from 25 X 1 6 ,
22 X 18 to 12.5 X 21.5 cm. They are made of ferrous
clay and are painted with engobes. The background
is of white slip. The colours found were: green,
brown, blue and yellow.
As regards artistic decoration, the Leżajsk tiles
can be divided into three groups: 1. plant ornament
ation; 2. animal motifs; 3. figure compositions, in
which there is a set of tiles with battle scenes
(fig. 29, 32, 34, 47), which can be attributed to the
potter Wojciech Krystaniecki. Then there is a sep
arate group of tiles from the "Subprefect's Manor
House" in Leżajsk most probably dating back to
the first half of the 19th century.

The article contains a description of a group of
50 brick-built chapels with columns, found exclusive
