Ignorabimus. Anthropological Notes
Obviousness of appearance is the starting point of this brief philosophical essay.
Taken from B . Chmielowski's famous 17-th century encyclopedia Nowe Ateny
(New Athens), a definition of a horse reads: ..Everybody sees what a horse looks
like". Set against Pontius Pilate's words about Jesus Christ „Ессе Homo" (Behold
the man), the definition becomes the basis for a survey of miscellaneous definitions
of man, formulated with reference to both Greek and Biblical tradition. But they all
seem to fail. Who is man? Ignorabimus.

The Fool. From the Perspective of a Few Worlds. Khalid Tyabji Talks Not
Only About Theatre with Jola Cynkutis, Dagnoslaw Demski and Sławomir
Sikora
When at college, Khalid Tyabji, who is a Hindu joined a theatre troupe run by
European Barry John in Delhi. The group performed both Hindu and European
plays. This was when Tyabji made his first contact with a world of local tribesmen.
Tyabji also studied anthropology and arrived in Poland to take the Ph.D. in
anthropology. He began to collaborate with actors whose roots were in Grotowski's
Laboratorium theatre. Tyabji tells about his theatre education, own theatrical vision,
mingling with members of tribal communities and life among the people, and about
gradually abandoning the attempt of scientific cognition towards cognition trough
common life. He began to produce spectacles in which he made use of the character
of a fool (e.g. Genaral Tomfoolery, Foolsong) The character turned out to be close
to his nature and allowed him, without being „tom between" to participate and live
in different worlds. He has also acted in the films Kamasutra and Hanuman.

Puppets in Ritual
The autor present a panorama of puppets participating in the different kind of rituals
mainly in Africa, Asia and America. In his enumeration readers can find reports on
such primary customs as cult of ancestors connected with funeral rituals, fertility
rituals and all other use of the magical puppets in the primary medicine men or in
the acts of devinations. He opposed the pure African or American ritual to the so
called Asian theatres. Asian puppet theater shadow ones and those with three
dimensional figures have not served in fact to communion with god by repetition of
his deeds and life (classic definition of ritual) executed in the collective manner but
had the individual, narrative character, executed by one puppeteer-priest (dalang,
pulavar) and besides many practical functions (exorcism, fertility targets,
supplication). The Author try to respond the question how does it happen that the
Asian theatre although presenting developed stories remained instruments of the
humans relationship with gods. He found the answer in different origins of the
European and Asian puppet theatre. The first started from the "pure" ritual giving
initiative to the coryphaeus who became stage characters; the second (Asian) had its
origins in acts of shamanns, who retained till now their leading functions as the
narrator of the still sacred shows. However the Author is aware that his classification
has only a model value because the ritual and theatre are full of hybrid phenomena.

The Jester. The Birth and Structure of a Myth
This text comprises an attempt at describing the fundamental structure of the
mythical thought which gave rise to the archaic and contemporary universal figure
of the jester, both "literal" and "metaphorical", which we encounter on all levels of
culture: from "low", folk, and popular to "high", from the circus and fairground
theatre to the cinema, painting, and music. Tracing the history of the jester via the
etymology of this concept in assorted languages, his fate in the circus, the theatre,
and literature, as well as the history of his costume, the author allows us to perceive
the bond which links thoroughly contemporary literary or film figures, whose
features of a jester, at first glance not at all obvious, are discovered by us only after
careful analysis, with their mythological ancestors, originating in Greek, Roman or
Hindu culture.
Death in Mass Media
The articles collected in the section Death in Mass Media were presented at session
organized by students of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of Culture
of Warsaw University in Spring 1998. The areas the young authors devote their
attention to include: film, TV, newspapers and popular periodicals, women's
magazines and tabloids, reporter's photography, cartoons, advertizing and a world
of computer cyberspace. You will find here reflections on the presence and absence
in the media of death, of playng with death, and commercialization of death. The
articles speak a lot about a state of contemporary culture dominated by the media.
And about seriousness and insignificace of the culture, and its peculiar
exhibitionism.

dowy projekt Quo Vudis (Unia Europejska, 1997) oraz współpracowała przy
powstawaniu spektaklu Człowiek Serce Khalida Tyabji.
Dagnosław Demski - etnolog (studia U W ) . Praca doktorska na temat ludowego
hinduizmu. Pracuje w Zakładzie Etnologii I A E PAN. Prowadzi! badania tere
nowe w Indiach, Pakistanie i na Białorusi.

Hennryk Jurkowski - ur. 1927, teatrolog, profesor w Akademii Teatralnej
w Warszawie Wydział Lalkarski w Białymstoku. Teoretyk i historyk teatru la
lek. Również prace z zakresu folklorystyki, semiologii, antropologii. Krytyk
teatralny publikujący swe prace w czasopismach „Literatura Ludowa", „Sce

z jego bogatą tak hinduską jak i europejską symboliką. Postać ta - jak twierdzi
- pozwala mu funkcjonować na granicy wielu światów (Europa, Indie, świat
społeczności plemiennych).
